Set up a 90 day plan. Most people try for only 2 to 3 weeks then give up when they see no results. Focusing on 90 days will allow your marketing strategies to start to work. Free marketing especially takes time to become ranked in the search engines as this area is very competitive. Everyone wants results for free!

Month 1 is much about choosing your marketing methods and if a newbie marketer, I would suggest one paid method and one free method. This first month will comprise learning and trying.

During month 2, you should be seeing a few winning campaigns – if you are getting it right.

In month 3, you will be getting results through your winning campaigns.

Moving ahead of time, i.e. by 6 months, you should be seeing leads being generated on a daily basis with a number of these converting. Now you are on your way to being a master marketer.

As said, start off with two marketing methods, become good and then become great. Two strategies should give you 90% of the results.

Accept you will make mistakes along the way, may have to take risks and find it is hard work. No one said it will be easy. However, it does not matter if it actually takes 6, 9 or 12 months before you see the expected results. The key is to have a plan and stick to it.

Are you one of the many people around the world who is working from home through one of the direct sales businesses? Where ever you are with this, are you clear who your audience is? If in the Multi Level Marketing sphere selling lotions, potions, pills and vacations, then my guess is you still knock on doors, talk to the family and friends as well as to hold house and hotel meetings. You need to find people who are prepared to listen and who will show less resistance to buy.

The first thing to do in your business is to understand who you are marketing to. There are a number of common profiles. For instance, there are the drivers, the go getters in life. There are also the high achievers and successful people.

The starting point when thinking about your audience is to think with the end in mind then reverse engineer the marketing. In other words understand what the people will end up with, whether a product or service or both and think about how best to make that connection – what you may need to say and do.

If looking for people to establish a home business and not to just buy your products then the following profiles apply:

•   Existing business or forma business owners
•   Real estate investors
•   Network marketers/MLMs
•   Corporate execs (CEOs, sales execs)

Be clear that you may think people join because of the money, but really it generally comes down to circumstances; wanting to fire the boss, escape the 9-5 rat race, wanting to put their children into private education, want to be at home to look after the children etc. See where I’m coming from. Why not go back to think about what got you started, then put this into the mind of a prospect. There will be others with similar circumstance to yours so consider the following to help you identify your audience:

•   What bothers you
•   What excites you (your dream)
•   What keeps you awake at night
•   What books do you read
•   What is my number 1 problem that I’m prepared to pay to solve

By completing the above, you effectively identify your target audience, people who you can relate to because they are similar to you. Basically they believe in what you believe.

Now the exciting part of this journey has two strands. You will need to learn to become a leader and learn how to market. They both can be done together. Being a leader means you will have an authority with power in your voice to make that connection with people. When connecting with a prospect they will get that feeling of wanting to follow you.

In terms of marketing, I’m going to recommend internet marketing. Why? Because there are a number of marketing methods, paid and free, that can be used to reach out to anywhere in the world. Choose on or two methods and produce ads targeting the audience you described above. Once they click on your ad, give them more details either through a capture page (landing page, squeeze page) or via your own website. Make sure there is an opt in box (a place for the prospect to leave their details) so that the prospect can reach out to you if your site makes that connection.

Imagine you were lucky to be picked to take a short flight in an F16 fighter aircraft. A chance in a lifetime. One can imagine the excitement. In a commercial plane you reach 10,000 ft in about 5 to 7 minutes. An F16 going straight up reaches 12,000 ft in 2 ½ seconds. Such a flight pulls 6 ½g. Excel was developed by Microsoft as they needed a way to track numbers. They thought it was so good they put it on the market.

99% of businesses are founded by an individual or a group of people who innovated the idea to solve their problem. On that idea they built a company.

The companies that struggle, keep throwing money at the problem and are likely to go bankrupt as those that ‘saw an opportunity in the market’. This is not adding value, but wanting to make money. For these people, everything is me, me, me. How do I get rich? How do I lose weight – etc rather than how do I help the person next to me to lose weight or how do I help the person across the road to become rich.

Simple things can help people. For instance, the whistle with the little ball in was a problem to a referee. The ref got tied with the ball filling up with spit. What do you know about empowering? Empowering comes from knowledge, wisdom and authority. So why don’t we apply this on a daily basis? We have an enemy and the enemy is that little person inside your head – the one that has grown up with us.

Sometimes it does feel like a battle. You want to do one thing but your mind fights against this. It is like having a war raging all around us. Most people are not aware of it and just get on with life.

Life is without doubt challenging. Even when we get knocked down occasionally, we need to learn to get up again. How quick you get up is down to you. You need to recognise the only person to change things is you.

Take responsibility for your own action and thoughts. Stop blaming others. To a large extent, we are in charge of our destiny. Think positive thoughts and you will be propelled into incredible greatness. Watch how you become empowered.

People give up too easily. Instead of persevering, they become discouraged with the struggle and the challenges. “I’ve tried, but just can’t seem to go any further”. Is this you?

Find a way through adversity. If knocked down, don’t stay down. Be determined to be good at what you want to do. Work your way through the challenges. Get up in the inside. Our circumstances may push us down, but stand up in the inside.

Stand firm. You may be in a situation where you believe you have done your best and it is time to stop - to quit! Just say No! Keep the faith. Don’t lose confidence. Get up – battle with your will and mind. Maybe you are working around the wrong people who are bringing you down, making you feel bad about yourself, mistreating you. Don’t become discouraged or depressed, move away into the space that is going to help you. Stand up in the inside. It’s about your will. No matter what you are going through or how difficult it may seem, stay standing. Act on your will and not your emotions.

Have you come across the term ‘board of directors’ in respect to helping you enjoy and fulfil your life? Your board of directors are those people who you look up to, seek inspiration, advice, guidance and direction. These are the people you can count on in your life to help you out of awkward situations and to be their when you want to talk. It is so easy to get lost in the fog of life, so having people you trust on your board can help you maintain that forward thinking and prosperous mindset.

Without the board, you are on your own. In this case how do you see yourself and how do you make your way through the traffic of life? Do you believe in yourself? Let’s interject with a short story.

Years before transatlantic flights were common, a man wanted to travel from Europe to the US. He worked hard and saved his money. Eventually he had saved enough to board a cruise ship. The trip at that time took between 2 to 3 weeks to cross the ocean. Having spent nearly all his money on the fare, he purchased a suitcase and filled it with cheese and crackers.

During the voyage, when it came to eat, he would make his way to the dining area, but instead of sitting at a table, crouched in a corner to eat his cheese and crackers. This routine went on day after day. He could smell the food being served up. Where many were complaining how full they were, he could only wish for the day to have a decent meal. But he had no extra money.

Towards the end of the trip and nearing the US, a man walked over to the person sitting in the corner and pointed out he had noticed him time and time again avoiding the good food and eating his cheese and crackers. He asked why he didn’t want to eat in the banquet hall with the others. The man in the corner felt embarrassed and explained how he only had enough money to buy a ticket for the journey across the ocean and had nothing left to buy food.

The gentleman replied, “Sir, didn’t you realise the food was included in the price of the ticket. The meals have already been paid for”.

When I first heard this story, how many people do you know have missed out and retreated into the corner. The man in the story had a goal, but he failed to address his shortfalls. True story or not, I feel this is not untypical of people making their way through life.

Are you a person sitting in the corner eating cheese and crackers or do you dine at the table? Don’t hold back. Take in the big picture. Develop a positive mindset, encircle yourself with positive and inspirational people (Your board of directors), take risks, believe and go out and do what it takes to get you to where you want to be.

What is the difference between those who make things happen compared to those that don’t? One of the differences is that those who are on a mission, want something so badly is driven by having a vision. They know what they are striding for, can see it and taste it. They follow through and do what is necessary to get to their destination. It’s like someone just filling bags with sand compared to someone looking to prevent a town from flooding. See the difference?

Getting to ones destination is based on the bigger picture and not those mundane repetitive activities done on a day to day basis. It’s all about putting things into perspective.  It’s the bigger picture that drives you to do the things you do. So does this sound like you? Do you have a vision to help you reach a destination. Prioritise your days to help achieve great things. Without vision, those things that matter will stop you achieving those great things. People without a vision are easily distracted – drifting from one thing to another.
4. Purpose. A purpose gives you a reason to get out of bed in the morning. It’s a case that if you did not show up that something important will be missed. Leaders show up.

This is not much about unicorns and rainbow stuff, but a way to establish what it is you want, feel hungry for it, have a target but most importantly know why. If you have lost your guiding light to what it is you are looking to achieve then seriously stop what you are doing. Take time out and sit back. If you are frustrated then this may be down to the lack of a system.

Take a high level view to what is going on. Are you achieving the expected results? Are you heading in the right direction? Really question yourself. Make a list of everything that is working. Aim for at least ten things. This should help shift your mind onto what is working as opposed to that that isn’t. It is really easy to lose sight, but setting a vision will help you get back on course.

How many times have you come up with an idea, do nothing about it and then find later the idea is being marketed. This has happened to me many times and sure I’m not alone. It all comes down to seizing the opportunity and making life changing choices. You will never be successful at anything if you keep putting things off or taking too long to make a decision – missing out.
In the 1870s two men worked extensively on modifying and improving telegraphy at a time working on technology much different to that of today. Both men were looking at transmitting sound down a wire and both explored the transmission of the human voice electronically.

What’s remarkable about this event is that both Alexandra Graham Bell and Elisha Gray filed their ideas at the patent office on the same day. On February 14, 1876, Gray filed a caveat (declaration for the intension to apply for a patent) with the U.S. Patent Office for a telephone design that used a water transmitter. That same morning, Bell's lawyer filed Bell's application with the patent office. Bell was the first person to file for a patent and was a result of Elisha Gray losing time on other things. At that point, those lost minutes cost Grey a fortune.

Why share this with you? This is a good example, not about how someone lost out big time, but more to the point about someone seizing the moment. You really don’t want to miss the boat especially if you have Ideas Working From Home you wish to market.

Another point to make is to only work on things that matter that makes a difference. Don’t settle for a ‘B’ grade. Aspire to succeed at everything you do. This leads me onto something else.

So it is all about seizing the opportunity and believing in yourself to get to that next level. Would you have stood up? Stand up for something bigger, don’t take second best. I keep writing motivational goal setting articles. Why is this? Understanding what you do is easy to describe e.g. a pilot, a chef, an entrepreneur etc. Understanding how you do what you do can also be explained. But do you know why you do what you do? Before you leave the page, just think about this for a minute.
Simon Sinek the author of ‘Discovering Your Why’ is also an inspiring speaker. Not only have I read the book, but have been on a ‘Discover your Why’ course. It really does make you think about why you like to do the things you do. Once your why is clear, the how and what then follows.

So knowing your why is only the start. What is motivating you on a daily basis? What is driving you out bed in the morning? How do you plan your future path? One of the methods, and yes you have heard this before, is to set goals. The principles of setting goals is a reminder, a route map to meet your vision or destination and is a key component to Strategies of Marketing.

Note this. Learning new skills is not the road to mastery. Mastery is about consistent daily practice. You can have all the systems, tools, techniques etc, but if you are not clear why you do the things you do then moving forward will be hard.

6 steps to setting a goal are as follows:

1. Personal Development. Who do you want to become? What is your mission or purpose? What do you want to achieve? List 3 things you want to become in the next year. What kind of person do you really want to become e.g. a world class internet marketer, a great communicator.List your top priorities for the next 3 months.
2. Material. What material things would you like to surround yourself with e.g. your ideal house, your sought after car etc. To get your desired material things mean you will need to be the best person of yourself everyday. The things you want will never exceed your development. There maybe no limitations to want material things you want but be realistic.
3. Financial. In the next year, what would you like as your monthly income?
4. Business. What three things would you like to accomplish over the next year?

How do you best use your time, learn and grow and be the best? Start with a goal, a vision; some sort of end game. Where do you want to be in your life and in your business? Think hard, write it down and break this down into a plan of action. Once you know where you are heading and as you move forward, part of your journey will involve practising although you may not even know this is happening. Testing, tweaking and trying things out is all about practising.
Practising is so important. However, it is important to practise on what really matters and stop practising all the things that don’t. This is so relevant if you are on a journey to build a small brick and mortar business or your Best Business Ideas From Home.

Success does not come by practise alone though. You must practise right and do the right things.

1. Have a good coach. Who are you associating with? Sometimes we need people around us to spur us on. You need to get around the right people. When I was 19 I had 2 properties – one rented and the other part rented. I sold them both after 3 years. I made a small profit all of which was spent within a few years. That was the end of my property adventure. Imagine if I had a coach to really tell me what I had my hands on, to advise how to build a bigger portfolio and how to invest.

1. Best effort. Are you practising in a way, time and place to do your best - self incentives.

1. Clear purpose. What are you aiming to accomplish? This is the essence of be-do-have. Fight from victory and not for victory. Effort and knowledge is like speed with no direction unless you have a purpose.

1. Right resources. Plug into the right resources. You only play well if you practise well.

Where are you on the practise continuum? What are your daily habits? Whether just starting out or in a phase of rapid progress, have you already played your greatest games and now into fine tuning mode?

Remember, practising never stops.

Practise the right things each and every day. You will get the results. Knowing where you are helps knowing where you want to go. Have a plan.

Apply some of these principles on a daily basis before you start on your business. Instead of jumping straight into your inbox, send out tweets, play on Facebook and getting caught up in the busyness of your business, write down 5 things on a pad that would help you move your business towards your goal. 5 things you know you have to do. Before getting busy into your business knock out those 5 things first. Common sense so you would think. But are you being busy and wonder why you may not be moving forward as quick as you would hope?  

So here is a question. Is busyness a form of laziness? Do you find yourself being busy and don’t have the time to do the things you really need to do? Is being busy an excuse to avoid those mundane activities that really need doing?

We all have the same amount of time! It is how we best use this time whether for pleasure or business. Practise to become good, prioritise your days by attacking 5 things that will make a difference. Do this and results will come a lot quicker.

I have written a number of articles now in relation to leadership. Why is this? I’m helping people to build a life of their own design. In other words, if you are not happy where your life is heading then I’m providing some ways to help change it. Agree it is not simple, but doing something now will have an impact later no matter how long it takes.
Creating and building a life of your own design takes commitment, focus and passion. Say for instance you have some great Ideas Working From Home. How do you take these ideas forward and change your life? To me it is not necessarily about the ideas or concepts, but whether one has the mindset to stay the course. This is where leadership comes into play.

Admiral Nelson, who defeated the French at the battle of Trafalgar, would often go below deck to spend time with his junior officers. This practice was unheard of. He didn’t go down to tell them what to do or to give them orders, but to listen to their stories because he was inspired by their energy and passion. They brought youth, spark, excitement and optimism. They had no experience. As we go up the ranks, we lose that passion despite gaining experience.

Nelson felt it was important to spend time with that youth to keep him energised. Equally he needed to share his experience to help the others grow.

This is a classic case of serving others, a leadership skill, and is not built into our culture or society as well as it should be.

Have you heard the term ‘servant leadership’? You generally never hear from people ‘I aspire to be a leader’, ‘I want to be a leader’, ‘I’m working on becoming a leader’. You normally hear ‘I want to be a leader of people’, ‘training my people to become leaders of people’ etc. In other words, we aspire to be a leader of people, not just a leader. There are no leaders of a company. This is the difference between leadership and management. A leader is responsible to those that follow them.

Getting results through influence is a leadership skill. Influence in business is much driven by authority; ‘I’m the boss and I’m going to tell you what to do!’ This is opposed to giving people access to your time and experience in order for them to learn and grow. If you have the experience, make it available to others – remain open.

What makes someone a lasting leader? Lasting leadership is not what is on the outside but what is within. It has everything to do with your character. This could be compared to beauty; getting your perspective right. It’s not about your hair style, expensive jewellery, lovely clothes, but the beauty within.

There was story about a department store selling beauty products and looking for a beautiful person to be pictured in a marketing campaign. The store asked its customers to send in pictures along with a story about the most beautiful women they knew. Thousands of letters were received. However, one particular letter got everyone’s attention hence was passed onto the president. Beside the picture was a note written by a boy from a broken home in a run down neighbourhood.

The note read:

‘A beautiful woman lives down the street from me. I visit her everyday. She makes me feel like the most important kid in the world. She listens to my problems, understands me, when I leave she always yells out the door – she is proud of me. The picture attached shows you she is the most beautiful woman in the World and one day hope to have a wife as pretty as her’.

Intrigued, the president of the company then looked at the picture. He was shown the photograph of a smiley toothless woman, bound in a wheel chair, spots, brown hair, wrinkles diminished by the twinkle in her eyes.

The president couldn’t use the picture in the campaign because he knew no beauty products were going to be needed to make this lady beautiful as beauty was driven from within.
